13 Beaches around Salvador, Bahia

Going South, to Bahia, the state around the big Baia the Todos os Santos, Bay of All Saints. This next beach is still North of the big city of Salvador, the state capital. Imbassai, The Way of the River, is a small village that has become a touristic attraction because of its beaches.

The river approaching the ocean? Or the ocean invading the river? Or both pending low and high tides….

I thought that the “windy city” was Chicago, IL.
Look at the deep marks of feet on the sand. Hard, deep walk on this soft sand. Less effort when one travels by boat. This location is South of Imbassai. So many beaches, difficult to remember the local names. The caravel sailors must be as lost as I am.
Other beach North of Salvador, Bahia state capital. How can the big boat be the closest to the sand? A swimming pool?
My friend showed me his preferred painting: the mouth of the river Jacuipe, River of the Animal Jacu that Eats Grains. His house was near this place.
We need real boats, not a painted boat…

Let’s go to the city of Salvador, Bahia, by ferryboat.
The skinny, vertical building is an elevator that connects the Cidade Baixa, Lower City, to the Cidade Alta, Upper City. Its initial construction terminated in 1873. The elevator rises about 240 ft (check Wikipedia: Elevador Lacerda). The yellow building is the city marketplace.
Looking down from behind the elevator building to the bay.
The Portuguese caravel approached this region in 1501. The bay was named Baia de Todos os Santos, All Saints Bay, in 1502.A Native-Portuguese family happened in 1509 after a shipwreck. A village was officially settled in 1534, sort of close to the local where the elevator was eventually built.
A huge bay but not the way to Bengal Bay and India.

Salvador is one of the oldest cities in Brazil. The Portuguese used the All Sains Bay for refuge and protection of the caravels against pirates.

Continuing to sail to beaches South of Salvador, BA. Itacare, the Jacaré de Pedra, Rocky Alligator village, has beaches, surfing competitions, and fancy musical shows with popular bands on park stages.

Porto Seguro, Secure Port, was THE place for the 16th century Portuguese to land. Walk on the new continent. Passage to Bengal Bay? Not really, just another river.

Let’s continue South looking for the channel to the Bay of Bengal, to the spice world.
