15 Paraty, an Imperial-Historical Town Worth Visiting
Paraty is a special town. So much so that it deserves a special chapter despite being in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Let’s continue our “caraveling” toward the South.
First stop was Paraty, then to the state of Sao Paulo.
Paraty, the River of Fish for the native Guianas, was founded by Portuguese in 1597. In the 17th century, Paraty became the gold trail from the interior of Brazil, state of Minas Gerais – General Mines – to the state of Rio de Janeiro then to Portugal.
One can approach historic Paraty by boat sailing in the Paraty Bay.
Paraty, an old “gold” port, has become another fishing port.
Paraty’s architecture is historically protected: the central street before business hours is shown below.
High tides inundate the little streets of Paraty.
This house was built against the rocks on the South side of the Paraty bay. The historical city is on the North side.
This beach is accessible by boat or walking through the trail over and around the hill. No roads for cars or even bicycles.
There are many interlinked bays in the region.
A distant beach with an old church that survived the times from caravels to cars.
Easier to reach this beach by boat than by car.
This chapel beach could be reached by car, driving a road off the intercoastal highway.
The highway is close to high mountains and the ocean. The following waterfall, just off the road, is refreshing against the heat.
The intercoastal highway travels near many beaches.
Does anyone have permission to drive on this highway?
